How are the break-away swivels "QC"ed?
10% are tested to +/- 5% tolerance.
How can you tell the break load on a break-away swivel?
It is stamped on the side, plus, it is indicated by the color of the break-pin.

Why are swing links illegal in some areas?
They can come apart if not used correctly.

Which size Directional Drilling swivels need a tool for rebuild?
DD swivels rated 60 lbs or more require a special tool for rebuild.
Which swivel can handle a compression load?
The DD swivel. This is because one of the bearings is flipped upside down.
Why must calcium-based grease be used with D.D. swivels?
Lithium-based grease will combine with bentonite (a type of clay), which is used to coat the walls in directional drilling. This causes the bentonite to enter the swivel, which then seizes up. Calcium-based grease, on the other hand, repels bentonite, allowing the swivel to turn freely. Also, DD swivels must be greased after every use to ensure proper operation.
